To date we have underwritten over 8000 free riding and swimming lessons.
Riding takes place every Monday from 10am to 5pm at the Equestrian Center. Lessons are 30 minute private tutorials and include both mounted and unmounted activities. Our equine assisted activities and therapies instructor, Karen Evans, is a P.A.T.H., pathintl.org, (Professional Association for Therapeutic Horsemanship) Advanced Level Certified Instructor. A 1998 graduate of Equest Therapeutic Horsemanship in Wylie, TX, Karen has worked in the equine assisted therapies profession as both a riding instructor and program director. Karen lives in Peralta, NM where she operates her business “HorsePlay New Mexico” offering training/instruction in classical natural horsemanship. Swimming lessons are offered two afternoons a week and are 30 minutes in duration. David is an accredited swimming instructor who has had a successful career as a swimming coach for major university swimming programs. Currently, Dave works at Santa Fe Prep School where he works in the Athletic department coaching Cross Country and Swimming along with teaching Middle School PE. LCC Students Meet Temple Grandin at Arroyo Hondo Ranch
As a child with autism, Temple Grandin struggled to understand why her body went into sensory overload over the simplest of things — bright lights, loud noises and certain touches to her skin.
The noted author and animal science professor at Colorado State University said she considers herself lucky that she was diagnosed early and was taught the importance of basic skills, such as table manners and how to greet people. It’s something she tries to pass on to others who might be in the same situation.
